Mississippi Department of Archives and History
This photograph was taken by Eudora Welty when she worked as a publicity agent for the Works Project Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression.
In her position, she traveled throughout the state of Mississippi, photographing a wide variety of people and events.
Many of those photographs have been preserved in her book of photographs One Time, One Place: Mississippi in the Depression: A Snapshot Album (Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1996).
