Born: February 25, 1894, in Gloster, Mississippi.

Died: November 3, 1965, of a cerebral hemorrhage, in Chicago, Illinois.

Education: Harvard University, B.A., 1921, M.A., 1932; attended Oriental Institute, University of Chicago, 1936, Oxford University, 1937-38, and Cairo University, 1953.
